Speaker: Christine Michelle Duffy, Esq., Senior Staff Attorney, Pro Bono Partnership and editor-in-chief and contributing author of the critically-acclaimed Bloomberg BNA treatise Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Workplace: A Practical Guide

The legal landscape relating to people who are gender affirmed, gender diverse, and/or not heterosexual-only has changed dramatically.  Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other individuals now have broader protections from discrimination and harassment in the workplace, school, housing, and public accommodations, such as homeless and domestic violence shelters.

Nonprofits that aren’t in compliance with the evolving legal rules pertaining to gender identity and sexual orientation (GISO) face costly lawsuits, loss of government contracts and grants, and negative publicity that replicates itself on social media.  These nonprofits will also significantly impair their ability to attract qualified workers and students.  The good news is that compliance with these rules is relatively easy to achieve.

This workshop will provide an overview of the law relating to GISO and an easy-to-follow road map for achieving compliant, welcoming workplaces, schools, shelters, and other environments.

Topics include:

  • Latest developments in GISO law
  • Written policies
  • How to address friction resulting from people who aren’t accepting of gender and sexual minorities
  • Appearance, dress, and grooming codes
  • Sex-segregated facilities (e.g., restrooms)
  • Employee benefits for same-sex spouses and gender-affirming medical procedures
