Nonprofit Westchester Strong: Girls Inc. Westchester

We are proud to spotlight NPW member Girls Inc. of Westchester County (GIWC) for their commitment to inspiring all girls, 6-18 throughout Westchester County to be Strong, Smart, and Bold both before and during these extraordinary times.

Girls Inc. Westchester serves participants ages 6-18 in several Westchester communities including Mount Vernon, Port Chester, New Rochelle, White Plains, Peekskill, Pelham and Ossining.

Girls Inc. Westchester has transitioned to an interactive, live, online format to support their participants during their time out of school. The new virtual program is offered three times per day, three days per week, recognizing the urgent need to maintain a sense of community, support and love for the participants, many of whom are feeling added anxiety or stress.

From elementary to middle to high-schoolers, GIWC gives participants the opportunity to voice their concerns in a safe environment and address any fears they may have because of this crisis. The participants are also focused on civic-engagement - building their knowledge and outreach to others including the most vulnerable, the senior population, and frontline workers. In concert with partners like Volunteer New York! and Microsoft, virtual thank you cards are being sent to senior homes and participants are learning more about coding and careers.

“We will never allow our participants and their families to face this crisis alone," said Michelle A. Nicholas, Executive Director of Girls Inc. Westchester. “We will continue to provide the needed resources and support, along with our partners. During this time and beyond, we must do whatever it takes to help our children find some sense of normalcy.”
