For years, Nonprofit Westchester has been a leading voice in the fight to reform New York State's broken nonprofit contracting system, working closely with Senator Shelley Mayer, Assemblymember Amy Paulin, and nonprofit partners across the state to advance meaningful solutions. We have engaged the business sector to understand the importance of these efforts and here in Westchester, The Business Council of Westchester and the Westchester County Association have offered their support for our efforts.
Last week marked a major milestone as the Legislature passed S.9761/A.10741, landmark contracting reform legislation that will help ensure nonprofit organizations are paid more promptly and can focus on serving communities rather than navigating costly administrative delays. Thank you to Senator Shelley Mayer and Assemblymember Amy Paulin for sponsoring the bills and for being champions of the nonprofit sector.
This achievement demonstrates what is possible when organizations work in coalition. NPW is proud to stand alongside the Human Services Council of New York, New York Council of Nonprofits, The New York Legal Services Coalition, and Nonprofit New York in advocating for these critical reforms. Together, our collective voice and persistence helped elevate the challenges nonprofits face and advance meaningful progress that can strengthen services for millions of New Yorkers.
Nonprofits show up on time for NY State every day - delivering mandated and other vital services on behalf of the government. We urge Governor Hochul to show up for our sector and the New Yorkers we serve.
As stressed in the coalition press release, similar legislation passed unanimously last year but was ultimately vetoed by the governor. Coalition partners know that the challenges facing nonprofits have only become more urgent since then, and we urge the Governor to sign the legislation into law. The reforms would represent an important step toward building a more effective, accountable, and sustainable partnership between New York State and the nonprofit organizations that serve millions of New Yorkers every day.
