From the National Council of Nonprofits
Nonprofits exist to serve the public good - not partisan politics. Charitable nonprofits are one of the few places left in American society where political party labels and ideology are left at the door – places where people come together across differences to address community needs.
This core principle, however, faces new threats. The Trump Administration and some in Congress want to insert partisan politics – and the dark money that fuels it – into the charitable nonprofit sector by eliminating a federal law that has protected nonprofits for more than 70 years, starting with houses of worship and religious organizations.
Removing these protections could severely damage the integrity and effectiveness of the entire nonprofit sector and our elections. Politicians may try to pressure nonprofits to endorse their election campaigns, exert control over organizations’ mission and the services they provide, and funnel tax-exempt charitable donations to their election war chest. This effort would radically alter campaign finance laws to benefit politicians at the expense of charities, houses of worship, and foundations.
It is critical that charitable nonprofits, including religious organizations, push back against these harmful efforts and help protect our organizations, the communities we serve, and our elections from partisan politics.
