Nonprofit Contracting Reform: Urge Governor Hochul to Sign On to Support the Nonprofit Sector

The New York State Legislature has passed S.9761/A.10741 and S.9855A/A.11179, two bills addressing delays and uncertainty in state contracts with nonprofits. Proposed 2030 Census Changes Could Harm Nonprofits and The People and Communities Served: Comments Due October 13th

The U.S. Census Bureau has proposed changes to the 2030 Census that would change how it determines where people are counted and would prohibit questions about race, ethnicity and sexual orientation on the decennial census questionnaire. The National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) warns that the proposed residence rules could leave some people out of the count and that removing demographic questions could make it harder to identify community needs. Census results inform congressional representation, federal funding and decisions nonprofits make about services. Read NCN’s overview.

>>Take Action! Ways to respond by October 13th, 2026

  • Submit a public comment. NCN’s comment guide explains the proposal and provides a template. Include examples of how your organization uses Census data and how the proposed changes could affect the communities you serve.

  • Review NCN’s national sign-on letter opposing the proposal. An authorized representative can sign on behalf of an organization.

  • Share the proposal and comment guide with colleagues who rely on Census data in their work.

New: 2026 Voter Engagement Guide and October 1st Webinar

The National Council of Nonprofits and Nonprofit VOTE have released a 2026 Voter Engagement Guide for charitable nonprofits.
