Our Advocacy for Nonprofit Professionals Learning Lab was so empowering! 36 participants learned from our expert facilitators from the Advocacy Institute - enormous thanks to Executive Director Marissa Martin, and Co-Directors of Training Nia Adam and Abby Ng.

This full-day session provided participants with the information needed to understand the importance of building coalitions to advance the many serious issues we need to address as a sector.

On Thursday, October 5th, over 85 participants joined us to learn A New Way to Talk About Nonprofit Overhead. The response to this content and perspective was overwhelmingly appreciative and positive.
There is a pervasive and false perspective that a nonprofit's effectiveness can be tied to low overhead and administration ratios. As a result, funders often limit A & O to a flat or low percentage of necessary operating expenses that are below the actual, verifiable expense of delivering services.
Lauren Candela-Katz, Chief Development Officer at Lifting Up Westchester, and Michael Goldman, Chief Financial Officer at the Child Care Council of Westchester created a masterful presentation with new, accurate language to frame and define A & O. They posed the critical questions required to shift the discussion and offered collaborative methods to advance change in how A & O is viewed and funded. We can not thank Lauren and Michael enough for working so hard to build this fantastic presentation. The recording of the event is now available on our YouTube channel - click on the image below to watch the full program.

Our Emerging Leaders Class visited the vibrant Yonkers Partners in Education College Zone on Thursday, October 5th. As Yonkers high school students arrived in the space after school to study and meet with their mentors, our ELPers met with YPIE Executive Director and NPW board member Sam Wallis.
First ELPers learned about YPIE's mission in partnering with students to ensure they are ready for, enroll in, and complete college. Then, the group engaged in a great discussion on program evaluation and measuring impact - which got the whole class thinking of ideas to bring back to their organizations. Huge thanks to Sam and his amazing team at YPIE for hosting us!
After the session at YPIE, the class headed outside to the Yonkers Brewing Company and met up with several ELP alumni for our Annual ELP Fall Alumni Event! The current class had a chance to connect with the alumni and each other over delicious drinks and appetizers. ELP Alumni Co-chair Dana Hysell, Outreach Services Specialist at the Westchester Library System, greeted the class and spoke about how important the ELP experience is for her. Special thanks to Juanita Pope, Child Care Council Director of Community Events and ELP Advisory Board member, for her outreach efforts in getting so many alums to attend! There were lots of smiles and laughs as everyone caught up with each other on a beautiful autumn day in Yonkers.
