A NEW WAY TO THINK ABOUT

A New Way to Think About…The Language We Use in Nonprofit Operations

Core Operating Costs – An alternative to using the term overhead, core operating costs are more representative of the essential expenses required to maintain the organization's daily operations, including staff salaries, rent, utilities, administrative costs, technology, marketing and fundraising costs, and more – just like any business.

Trust-based Funding/Philanthropy - Trust-based philanthropy is a movement that balances the power dynamic between nonprofit organizations and funders.  It is a system of mutual accountability and respect, where philanthropic systems and structures reflect the needs and dreams of communities and the expertise of nonprofit professionals. (www.trustbasedphilanthropy.org)

Scarcity Mindset – The scarcity mindset drives action based on limited resources, leading to fear, anxiety, and short-term survival rather than long-term growth. In nonprofits, this mindset can manifest as an excessive focus on minimizing costs, underinvesting in staff and infrastructure, and competing for limited funding.  In turn, this hinders an organization’s and the sector’s ability to collaborate, innovate, grow, and achieve its mission.

Unlock a deeper understanding of the language shaping nonprofit success! Watch our Nonprofit Strength video series to explore these essential terms and more. Learn how these concepts can transform your approach to nonprofit operations and empower your organization to thrive.
