NPW EVENT RECAP

On March 29th, 80 people attended NPW's forum, A Case for Inclusion: Leveraging the Talent of People with Disabilities in the Workplace.

Program moderator, Kathleen Macias-Torres, Executive Director, SPARC, and Chair of the NPW Disabilities Roundtable, stressed, "As we work toward achieving diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of our communities, it is important to recognize the value that people with disabilities bring to our society and the workforce. Today's forum was an essential step in breaking down barriers to employment that people with disabilities face every day. With the incredible resources and information provided at today’s program, our small and all businesses will be prepared to tap into the largely untapped talent of differently abled people.”

Business executives stressed that their efforts are not about charity, they are about achieving bottom line business objectives related to productivity and profit. Jacqueline Mamorsky, a panelist and Program Coordinator for My Sisters' Place, Inc., stated "We all face challenges during the hiring process especially when asking for accommodations. We just want to be seen for our skills and expertise and not our disability."

Speakers and Panelists:

  • Kathleen Macias-Torres, Executive Director, SPARC
  • Jeffrey Tamburo, Trainer, Cornell University
  • Jacqueline Mamorsky, Program Coordinator, My Sisters' Place
  • Sean Meade, General Manager, Cambria Hotels
  • James Mase, Director of Giving, Prospector Theater

Should NY tenants have right to an attorney in eviction court?
NY eyeing bill in budget debate.

On a cold Friday morning in Yonkers, a steady flow of tenants waited in court pews for their eviction cases to be heard. Few had legal representation. Nearly every landlord present sat alongside an attorney. Inside the third-floor courtroom, some tenants appeared confused hearing Judge Ada Medina’s orders, or the motions from landlords' counsels.

A bill being considered in advance of New York's upcoming budget deadline aims to disrupt this imbalance by guaranteeing tenants' right to counsel in eviction proceedings across the state. About a dozen people gathered in a circle in the hallway outside the courtroom. The group was there to see eviction cases. Read the full Lohud article here
