A NEW WAY TO THINK ABOUT...
NONPROFIT OVERHEAD

Let’s play a game of True or False! (answers below)

  1. Historically, funders have not supported programs that have low administration and overhead (core operating) rates.
  2. Nonprofit A&O/Core Operating costs in grant proposals almost always reflect the actual, verifiable expense of delivering services.
  3. Credible state-wide surveys show that nearly 20% of New York nonprofits take out lines of credit/loans to fund programs because of delayed government contracts or grants.
  4. It is easy for most nonprofits of all sizes to get a NICRA (Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement) for direct federal funding.

Watch our webinar “A New Way to Talk About Nonprofit Overhead” to learn more about how low-overhead caps limit nonprofits' growth and sustainability. Stay connected and join the conversation! Use #ANewWaytoThinkAbout on social media and check out our upcoming events.

NPW UPCOMING EVENTS

September 12, 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM, WLS: Advocacy Learning Lab

There is a common misconception that 501c3 nonprofit organizations cannot engage in legislative lobbying or advocacy activities. This is not true. In fact, federal and state laws allow for these critical activities. Every nonprofit should know their rights and understand how to lobby and advocate to most fully achieve their missions and advance needed change.

September 19, 5:00 - 6:00 PM, Virtual: NPW Leaders Inspiring Leaders Affinity Group

2024 Fall Government Relations Series: October 9th and 23rd

Sign-on Letter to Governor Hochul in Support of Legislation to Address Issues with Nonprofit Contracting

SIGN-ON HERE

This sign-on letter supports legislation to address serious issues with nonprofit contracting. With our advocacy, S.4877-A (Mayer) / A.2740-B (Paulin), has passed both chambers this session and we are now advocating for Governor Hochul to sign the bill.

We know the burden caused by delays in executing and reimbursing nonprofit contracts in New York State impacts organizations across all service areas, the institutions that work with them, and, most importantly, the people and communities we serve.

Please read the letter and SIGN-ON by EOD Thursday, August 1st. Please feel free to share this letter with other organizations impacted by the delays in the contracting process.

EVENT RECAPS

On July 25th, members of NPW's Public Policy Committee met to learn more about NPW’s success in advancing Progress on NPW State Advocacy on Prompt Contracting and Procurement and what advocacy is needed going forward. Thank you to Deanne Braveman, Senior Vice President, Mercury Public Affairs, LLC for providing this important update. Thank you also to our Policy group chairs Ron Abad and Jennifer Ryan-Safsel.

We are pleased that S.4877-B sponsored to Senate Shelley Mayer and A.2740-B sponsored by Assembly Member Amy Paulin has passed the Assembly and Senate. This is monumental as this Bill has not previously passed the Assembly. There is more to go as we continue to work with the legislature and reach out to the Governor to ensure enactment into law. Please Sign-On to our letter to Governor Hochul and help ensure that this Bill becomes Law.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for NPW’s Peer-to-Peer Affinity Group on July 26th - the only affinity group in New York State for nonprofit personnel of color. And welcome to the newcomers!

As always, Dr. Alexandria Connally, NPW’s Racial Equity Consultant, guided the group with a blend of laughter and reflection into a profound discussion on racial trauma and the diverse ways people of color experience it.

Thank you to Michelle A. Nicholas, NPW Board Member and Founder & CEO of The NICO Consulting, for also facilitating this group. Learn more about Peer to Peer here.

Thank you to the affinity group sponsors: PCSB Community Foundation, United Way of Westchester and Putnam, Pace University and Westchester Library System.
