Scam Alert: Fraudulent Donation Refund Requests
Several nonprofits are reporting receiving a large, unexpected donation, supposedly made in memory of a loved one. The donation comes looking like a legitimate cashier’s check. Soon after, they are contacted by someone saying the donation wasn’t meant to be that large, and they are asked to refund a portion of it. But then the fraudulent cashier’s check bounces, leaving the nonprofit with no way to recover the amount they “refunded” to the donor. >> Read More

On the evening of Thursday, Feb. 22nd, members of the Emerging Leaders Program Class of 2024 had a great time at a festive ELP meet-up. With the largest class in ELP history, we aimed to provide ELPers an extra chance to connect and strengthen their relationships. Thank you to the Westchester Library System for generously hosting and allowing us to change your conference room into a social hall!
The ELP advisory board, comprised of ELP alums Danté R.H. Reda, Dana Hysell, Krishna Brodigan, and Juanita Pope took charge of the meet-up, facilitating engaging icebreakers and sharing personal testimonials of their enriching ELP journeys.
They reminisced about the enduring friendships forged, the cross-organizational connections established, and the opportunities to collaborate and partner within the sector. Additionally, they celebrated achievements such as awards and promotions attained since their participation in the program.
By the end, no one wanted to leave! Huge thanks to the ELP Advisory Board for putting this meet-up together and to our ELP program sponsor M&T Bank.

Funding for Mental Health Initiatives through Brown & Brown Insurance: Shifting Gears on Brain Health Funding Opportunity
One of Brown & Brown’s key focuses is Brain Health. Their CEO Powell Brown and his brother Kelim and Barrett are avid cyclists. From August 20 - 26, 2023, they cycled the French Alps to raise awareness and funds to support brain health - their term for mental health.
Powell, Kellim and Barrett have successfully (and safely) completed the ride and raised several million dollars that will be donated to nonprofit organizations working in the areas of brain/mental health research, education, prevention, and treatment. The Shifting Gears on Brain Health Donor Advisory Committee is excited to announce that the application period for grant submissions has begun. The application deadline is March 31, 2024, with decisions to follow in August 2024. Grant recipients will be notified by September 1, 2024.

Office of U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand Fiscal Year 2025 Appropriations Update
The Office of U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand provides the following update on the fiscal year 2025 (FY25) appropriations and Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) processes. The office is now accepting applications for CDS and requests for programmatic appropriations for FY25. The deadline to submit requests is March 13 at 11:59 PM EST.
The forms for CDS applications and programmatic requests can be found here: FY25 Appropriations Requests - Kirsten Gillibrand. CDS Account Guidance PDF.
Congressionally Directed Spending Requests allow Members of Congress to request that federal funds be set aside for specific projects in their states. This is an opportunity for state, local, and tribal governments and nonprofit organizations to apply to obtain funding for projects that would benefit from one-time allocation of federal funds. Please direct all questions to appropriations@gillibrand.senate.gov.
