Board Development for Small But Mighty Nonprofits

Facilitator: Alisa Kesten, Executive Director, Volunteer New York!

The board of directors is the governing body that oversees the activities and sets the tone and direction of your nonprofit organization. The board fulfills various roles and responsibilities. It is important to have an effective board to govern and lead your nonprofit to help achieve the mission/goals. Creating an effective board is an ongoing process that includes recruitment, engagement and development.

That said, how in the world does a smaller Westchester nonprofit do it?

This will be a discussion, not a lecture. There will be no magic formula. Just one person’s perspective and lessons learned from others.

You can bet we will talk about:

  • Board recruitment & nomination
  • Defining board roles
  • Board/Staff relationship
  • Running effective meetings
  • Board advocacy and fundraising
