During this time of uncertainty about federal funding for safety net programs, nonprofit, healthcare, and business leaders from across the region met to underscore the urgent need to support nonprofits, which are the bedrock of the region’s economic health. 

On March 20th, 2025 Nonprofit Westchester launched its inaugural program in the Inside the Nonprofit Sector series - "Strengthening Westchester's Health & Economy: New Data Revealed" where experts shared recent data on how nonprofits help to drive Westchester’s economy and reduce healthcare and other social services costs through proactive programs that keep residents healthy and safe.

ALICE in the Nonprofit Workforce

ALICE in the Nonprofit Workforce: A Study of Financial Hardship is the first report of its kind to examine financial insecurity among nonprofit workers, created by Independent Sector and United for ALICE. It rigorously analyzes publicly available data to understand the financial status of the country’s 13.9 million nonprofit employees in greater detail than ever before. According to the report, about 22% of nonprofit workers in the United States struggle financially.

2024 ALICE in Westchester County Snapshot

ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed – households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county (the ALICE Threshold). Combined, the number of ALICE and poverty-level households equals the total population struggling to afford basic needs. Read more about the ALICE population in Westchester County.
