Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center-Memory Keepers GenerationsForward Lecture: Helen Rubel To Speak

Please join the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center from the safety and comfort of your home on June 4 at 5 p.m. to hear Memory Keepers GenerationsForward Speaker Helen Rubel.

Helen Rubel is the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. Helen tells the story of her mother and maternal grandmother, who lived in harmony with their neighbors in Hadamar, as small town in Western Germany. After Kristallnacht, where the Nazis destroyed Jewish homes, business, and synagogues, their entire lives changed. Helen shares her mother’s first-person account of that night and how she and Helen’s grandmother escaped to Holland, where they hid in an attic in Amsterdam until the end of the war.

The important theme of Helen’s story is the value of being an “upstander,” someone who stands up for what is right. This concept is illustrated by the courage of a Dutch family, who hid her mother and grandmother. She explores the themes of not giving up, being resourceful, taking risks, and just plain luck contributed to her family’s survival.

Helen has spoken to groups on what it is like to grow up as a child of a survivor and first-generation American. She has made several visits to her parents’ hometowns in Germany and participated in remembrance programs there.

Helen is married with two adult children. She is a licensed Social Worker, who has worked with diverse populations including preschool children with special needs to elderly, homebound seniors. For more information and registration please visit our website https://hhrecny.org
