Advocacy Alert – New York State and Westchester County Need Federal Stimulus Support
In widely publicized news briefings and written updates, Governor Cuomo has warned that without federal relief, New York will have face a budget deficit in the billions and slashes will hit health care and education.
At yesterday’s NPW Update with Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Senator Shelley Mayer, the Majority Leader warned of a 13 billion dollar budget deficit, and stressed that support from the federal government is crucial.
The nonprofit sector in Westchester knows that the impact of these potential cuts will be felt most deeply on those that have already been the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic – people of color, low-income earners and households, youth at greatest risk of falling behind academically and the immigrant community.
Our federal representatives in the Senate, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer have been strong advocates for federal funding to state and local governments. They have joined colleagues in announcing a plan to provide local governments with direct federal relief that can be used to pay for essential services and offset lost revenues and increased costs from the COVID-19 emergency. The Direct Support for Communities Act would complement direct relief to states, which is also vital in this crisis.
