Westchester Disabled on the Move (WDOM) will be celebrating 35 years of serving people with disabilities at their Strive For 35: Comedy For a Cause Celebration featuring comedians Bobby Collins and Joey Vega on Thursday, October 17, 2019 from 7pm-10pm at Mulinos at Lake Isle located at 660 White Plains Road in Eastchester, NY. This year’s honorees are Gerard and Lucille Acer who will be receiving the Spirit of Independence Award; New York State Senator Shelley Mayer who will be receiving the Public Servant/Advocate of the Year; and the Town of Rye who will be receiving the Corporate Citizen Award.
“We are excited to be celebrating 35 years of serving people with disabilities and are looking forward to a great evening ahead filled with laughs and celebrating our honorees,” said Melvyn R. Tanzman, Executive Director, Westchester Disabled on the Move. “A special thank you is needed for our hard working staff, our dedicated board members, and wonderful supporters over the years that have allowed for us to continue our mission of advocating for an improved quality of life and civil rights for all people with disabilities.”
The Spirit of Independence Award will be presented to Gerard and Lucille Acer of Eastchester who best exemplify the mission of independent living in action through their years of productive employment as well as maintaining a loving and supporting marriage. Through their living example, the general population is educated that people who are viewed as “different” can be capable as well as successful members of the community. New York State Senator and Yonkers resident Shelley Mayer will be honored as the Public Servant/Advocate of the Year for her tireless advocacy in representing people with disabilities. As a current Senator, Mayer has supported the Independent Living Network and has been instrumental in granting them a budget increase in over ten years. The Town of Rye will be this year’s Corporate Citizen of the Year Award for their continuing efforts to make their parks and facilities accessible to all and becoming models for inclusive recreation.
