TAKE ACTION NOW: Nonprofits Must be Included in the COVID-19 Stimulus!

Dear Nonprofit Community,

Thank you for all you are doing to sustain our communities through the COVID-19 pandemic. Congress recently passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, and is now quickly working to pass an economic stimulus package to respond to the recession brought on by COVID-19. The Senate proposal is already out. We must make our voices heard, as powerful economic engines of our city, state, and national economies.

We need you to TAKE ACTION and tell Congress nonprofits must be included in any federal stimulus package. Feel free to use the boilerplate language below to contact your Congressmembers today.

BOILERPLATE MESSAGE

Nonprofits in New York City account for 16% of the private workforce and 18% in New York State, compared to just over 10% nationally. Our wages are some of the best in the Bronx, Kings, and Richmond Counties. The arts sector in New York City employs 293,000 people, paying $30.4 billion in wages, and attracts tourists who fly to New York and stay in New York’s hotels. The human services sector employees over 40,000 people in the City. We are faith centers, philanthropic institutions, schools, advocates, environmental justice champions, housing, economic, and community development sites among many other fields. Nonprofits must be included in the federal stimulus package, as the infrastructure and vibrancy of our city and our state. Nationally we contribute $10 billion in GDP and employ 12 million workers.

We are asking Congress for:

  • $60 billion specifically for the nonprofit sector across the country to maintain operations, expand scope to address increasing demands, and stabilize losses.
  • These funds can be distributed quickly through multiple funding streams, including, but not limited, to the expansion of the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program for nonprofit employers, emergency grants to nonprofits operating under grants from federal, state, local, or other pass-through entities, and other ways to ensure the continued flow of charitable donations.
  • A payroll tax credit, to ensure aid is applicable to nonprofit organizations.
  • “Above the line” or universal charitable deduction contributions through the end of 2021.
  • Stimulus efforts that include funding for freelance and gig workers, and our undocumented community members.
