Mission Statement
The New York Milk Bank is dedicated to improving the health and survival of infants in need by providing them with safely pasteurized donor human milk when their mothers’ own milk is unavailable or insufficient.
The New York Milk Bank is committed to the following:
• Ensure that safe, pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) is available to vulnerable infants if mother's own milk is unavailable or insufficient.
• Ensure safety and quality control of storage, handling, tracking and feeding of PDHM.
• Educate the medical community about the importance of and use of PDHM.
• Assist New York hospitals in developing policies and procedures for obtaining and using PDHM in New York State.
• Educate the community on the benefits of using PDHM as the supplement of choice when mother's own milk is unavailable or insufficient.
• Foster the development of human milk collection sites throughout New York State to facilitate milk donation.
• Reduce health disparities in breastfeeding by providing PDHM.
• Advocate for the use and reimbursement of PDHM especially in minority and underserved populations, among whom prematurity rates are highest and breastfeeding rates are lowest.
• Encourage research into the unique properties of human milk and its uses in collaboration with participating hospitals.
