Nonprofit Westchester Strong: STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck

The COVID epidemic has required innovative solutions from the STEM community.  The STEM Alliance of Larchmont-Mamaroneck has responded quickly to use their non-profit platform to find solutions for a wide range of community problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic.  As innovators, they have led the way in several key areas: Here are three examples:

FOOD DISTRIBUTION LOGISTICS

The STEM Alliance offered its logistical skills to the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force so they could accelerate from a bi-weekly traditional delivery to weekly drive through distributions.  The STEM Alliance has experience managing large events such as their annual STEM festival.  They applied those skills to scale up to the growing need of over 600 bags weekly while maintaining safety for volunteers and clients alike.

MOBILIZING MAKERS

The STEM Alliance funded the materials that “makers” needed to create Personal Protective Equipment for essential, frontline workers.  They raised over $8,000 much of which supported the work led by Jerry Orans’ (MHS Class of 2022).  Through Hack the Pandemic, Jerry mobilized makers across the country to manufacture hundreds of face shields and acrylic intubation boxes and get them delivered to where they were needed most.

VIRTUAL MENTORING

The STEM Alliance launched a one-to-one digital mentoring program for low income children in their area. The local school District provided families with devices and connectivity, but these children need additional help in navigating online learning platforms.  Most have limited digital fluency and struggle with the level of English literacy needed to be successful at distance learning.  Without additional help, they were at-risk for significant learning loss.  Our Virtual Mentoring program helps these students learn critical digital skills so they stay motivated, focused and engaged with learning online.

DIGITAL EQUITY NOW - A Westchester County Initiative

Next up, the STEM Alliance is launching a Westchester-wide initiative: Digital Equity Now. The mission is simple: provide a device, wifi connectivity and 15 hours of tech education to low income families. Digital fluency is a modern necessity that should be available to all. Connect with the STEM Alliance to make Digital Equity Now a Westchester reality.
