Nonprofit Westchester Strong: Human Development Services of Westchester (HDSW)

NPW is proud to spotlight Human Development Services of Westchester (HDSW) which provides care management services to those recovering from physical health and behavioral health-related illnesses so they may remain stable in the community; residential services including offering transitional and permanent housing options; recovery oriented services in their Living Room Day Respite program; and employment, education and social engagement services at HOPE House.

HDSW has been keeping very busy during the COVID crisis, offering residential and other unique services to help individuals support their mental health. The HDSW Living Room, a non-hospital setting designed to provide a comfortable, calm and relaxed environment for those who need a safe place, has been open every day, with the exception of three days for deep sanitizing, providing both in-person and tele-crisis services for those in need. Kelly Darrow, Chief Program Officer, has coined a new term, "Living Zoom", as the use of Zoom took over the room. Community residences have also been open with staff providing services every day.

HDSW has met the needs of individuals in their care since day one of the pandemic - establishing an emergency food pantry in addition to their existing pantry. This has helped those not able to access the pantries in their neighborhoods and those who are too afraid to leave their homes. To ensure connection and attention to members of HOPE House, HDSW staff began cooking. With additional donations of boxed lunches and hot meals, since May 6th 295 meals, 45 bags of produce, and 103 bags of groceries were delivered to HOPE House members in need.

HDSW considers all their staff to be truly Essential Super Heroes.
